Korg Monotribe Analogue Ribbon Synthesizer

Korg Monotribe Analogue Ribbon Synthesizer

The Korg Monotribe is a compact analog synthesizer and drum machine released in 2011. It’s part of Korg’s Monotron series but offers more features, including a sequencer and a three-part drum section.

Key Features of the Korg Monotribe

1. True Analog Synthesis

  • Single analog oscillator (VCO) with selectable waveforms: Sawtooth, Triangle, and Square.
  • Analog filter (VCF), based on Korg’s classic MS-20 filter (resonant low-pass filter).
  • Analog envelope (EG) with a simple Decay-only control.

2. Built-in Analog Drum Machine

  • Includes three analog percussion sounds:
    • Bass Drum (Kick)
    • Snare Drum
    • Hi-hat (Closed & Open)

3. 8-Step Electribe-Style Sequencer

  • 8-step sequencer for creating repeating melodic patterns.
  • You can record pitch, gate, and filter automation in real time.
  • Syncs with external gear via Sync In/Out (3.5mm jacks).

4. Ribbon Keyboard

  • Instead of keys, it has a capacitive ribbon strip for playing notes.
  • Offers wide and narrow modes for easier control.

5. Battery-Powered & Portable

  • Runs on AA batteries (or a 9V power adapter).
  • Small, lightweight, and perfect for on-the-go jamming.

6. Expandability & Hacking

  • Can be hacked to add MIDI and other custom mods.
  • Syncs with Korg Volcas, Monotrons, and other gear.
  • Firmware updates added features like active step sequencing and gate time control.
