9th May 1998 Martyrs Square, Beirut, Lebanon

On May 9, 1998, The Prodigy performed at Martyrs' Square (Arabic: ساحة الشهداء Sahat al Shouhada), historically known as "Al Burj" or "Place des Cannons", is the historical central public square of Beirut, Lebanon. The central public square had previously served as part of the Green Line that divided the city during the Lebanese Civil War. At the time of the concert, Beirut was still recovering from the conflict, marked by damaged infrastructure, political tensions, and ongoing security risks.

A feature by Matt Smith in the May 23, 1998 issue of NME documented the trip and the band's reaction to the environment:

• Keith Flint recalled earlier travel in the Middle East:

  “I got stoned, tear-gassed and chased. Getting tear-gassed when you're stoned is even worse!”

• Liam Howlett described his anticipation of the venue:

  “Playing Beirut is gonna be like getting on the fairground ride. You want to go on it but you've got this anticipation of how it's gonna kick off.”

• Stage setup: Howlett noted the improvised technical infrastructure at the square, including large electrical cables, makeshift connections, and “no fuses, nothing.”

Unlike many major Western artists who avoided the region, The Prodigy frequently scheduled shows in politically or socially complex locations during the 1990s, including Moscow, Poland, and Estonia. The Martyrs' Square performance temporarily converted a former civil war division line into a concert venue.
