About Brixton nights by Siobhan Grogan, Sunday Mirror 11th Dec:
The sign on the front door of Brixton Academy said it all: THIS SHOW IS VERY LOUD. EARPLUGS ARE AVAILABLE. Well, no one could say they hadn’t been warned.
Of course, none of The Prodigy’s ardent fans wanted to take up the offer of protection. Buzzing with excitement at seeing a band considered one of the best live acts around, they were packed in like sardines and cheering enthusiastically long before the band even took to the stage.
When they did, they blew everyone’s mind. Chief vocalist and rapper Maxim Reality led most songs and cut an imposing figure with his wild dreadlocks and a white mask covering half his face.
But all eyes were really on the bands iconic dancer and occasional vocalist Keith Flint. Dressed all in black with his eyes circled heavily in kohl and even his hair dyed jet black, he threw himself about the stage like a man possessed, pouring with sweat, eyes wilde and climbing over anything that got in his way.
At one point, he even barged furiously up the side aisle, pushing the audience out of the way and inspiring an excited conga line of head banging fans.
As anthems like Firestarter and Poison kept on coming, the electric atmosphere would have forced anyone to dance even if the tunes didn’t.
Though it may have been a wintry night in Brixton, indoors resembled a summer music festival with fans on each others’ shoulders and boys crowd surfing with their shirts off, and hands in the air clapping along.
